A compounding pharmacy that manufactures and distributes individualized pharmaceuticals for doctors, clinics, and patients wanted to leverage AWS to expand their customer support and data analytics capabilities. Being in a greatly regulated domain, the pharmacy required a high level of regulatory compliance and reporting baked into its cloud environment before it could take advantage of the solution. Credera partnered with the pharmacy to architect and implement a secure, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-regulated, Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST)-compliant landing zone in AWS to meet its needs. This initiative unlocked opportunities for the pharmacy to improve its customer support experience and mature its data and analytics practice.

The compounding pharmacy was experiencing both a reduction in customer satisfaction from frequent system outages and a lack of visibility into the ongoing operations of the business caused by nascent data and analytics practices. Pharmacy leadership determined that AWS provided the ability for the company to increase system reliability and mature its data and analytics capabilities but needed help getting started. Their goal was to build a strong foundation that improved reliability, ensured a high level of security and governance, and provided a launching pad for differentiated cloud development.
The Solution
Building a landing zone for the future.
Credera and the compounding pharmacy worked together to design, plan, and deliver a comprehensive AWS landing zone that aligned best practices with the company’s regulatory expectations. Credera’s landing zone workshop, architecture, and automation cloud accelerators were leveraged to build the pharmacy’s cloud platform in an iterative process.
First, Credera established a secure, single-sign-on (SSO) federated AWS account footprint using the following technologies:
AWS Control Tower
AWS Organizations
AWS SSO
AWS Security Hub
AWS GuardDuty
From there, Credera provisioned a hub and spoke network with AWS Transit Gateway to centrally manage and monitor connectivity to the pharmacy’s legacy solutions.
Finally, Credera deployed HIPAA/HITRUST controls through AWS Config to monitor and alert for compliance violations.
