Q&A With Ryan Gross

What will you focus on during your time at Credera?

I am here to help the data practice grow. To do that, I'll focus on four main areas.

1. Helping the team understand where the field of data and analytics is going over the next two to three years. If we look at the point where the practice is two to three times the size of where it is now, then our teams won't be doing the work of today, they will be doing the work of tomorrow.

2. Once we know the future of the field, we can work toward building consulting capabilities that will help clients solve these new problems. I'll help our team shape offerings and assets (reference architectures, frameworks, methodologies, technical accelerators, etc.) we can use to get really good at solving these problems. This will also provide a unique knowledge base we can build in our people alongside external training on core knowledge.

3.  I'll pursue conversations with clients about the opportunities we can help them unlock, because we must do real work to solve real problems to continue to build useful offerings. I'll also support our teams that are delivering at the edge of these offerings to ensure they have what they need to succeed.

4.  Finally, I will help get a broader set of input by building thought leadership content to generate conversations with others who are helping to shape this future.

What led to your decision to join Credera originally?

It was a confluence of three things:

First, I was interested in helping a practice grow rapidly—setting ambitious targets and working to achieve them—so the growth trajectory of the firm was compelling.

Second, I was really excited for the chance to work with Vincent Yates (our Chief Data Scientist) to build a team that could solve our client’s really hard problems with cutting edge data science. I believe this capability has network effects for our ability to bring in really smart people and develop the platforms that support the new data products, providing the technology and organizational scale to help clients really improve their enterprise data maturity quickly.

Finally, I was compelled by the quality of everyone I talked to at the firm, both in their ability to set strategic vision for the firm and as people who really care about one another.

How would you describe your approach to leadership?

I believe in leading “from the front,” which means riding alongside our teams as they find, win, deliver, and develop tools for the work we do in service of clients. I also want to create opportunities for people to harness their passions in a way that leads to long-term opportunities, focusing them on the activities that intersect their interests and market demands, and helping them set goals to move themselves and the practice forward.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?

Focus on helping everyone you work with get better at the little things they do regularly. This has applications on so many levels.

For instance, a team building software can become much more efficient by reducing the time it takes to build and test each change they make, so development environments are a key differentiator. On another level, many of the data science projects we help our clients with process the central parts of their operations faster (i.e., building a sales forecast for each product, recommending the right product for a customer, underwriting an insurance policy, or weeding a field). As a consulting firm, we can get better by building frameworks that help us share knowledge across similar projects.

What are you most excited about now that you’re a part of the Credera team?

I'm really excited about the ways we’re working together to solve organization-level problems by combining the expertise we build across our different practices. I really see collaboration as the differentiator between big firm and boutique from a client experience perspective. The leadership team has done an excellent job putting in place structures that encourage collaboration—and removing those that don't—and this has already led to great success!
