Credera collaborated with a leading restaurant services operator to develop a highly scalable and reliable mobile handheld solution that improves the in-restaurant team member and guest order experience while offering superior performance and stability during peak hours. In leveraging Google Cloud Platform’s (GCP) Cloud Functions, Cloud Firestore, and Cloud Monitoring, the team built a robust, event-driven architecture and back end that scales to meet traffic demand as needed, improves app performance, provides metrics and alerts, and manages cost for resources on an as-needed basis. The solution has been deployed across over 1,200 restaurant locations and maintains high performance and stability during critical business hours.

The Challenge

Creating a reliable mobile application.

The operator’s previous mobile handheld application (Aloha Mobile) was not meeting expectations. The application crashed during peak business hours, was overly dependent on a strong network connection, and operated slowly with long load times resulting in poor guest and team member experiences. In addition, this solution had only deployed to a subset of locations and could not be rolled out nationally following feasibility studies. The operator sought to develop a new application that would address these issues and scale effectively.

The Solution

Designing a new, high-performing application.

Credera designed and developed a new application that used Google Cloud Functions for a serverless backend and Cloud Firestore for a NoSQL database. Credera employed event-driven, scalable cloud functions and Cloud Firestore’s offline caching capabilities to deliver a stable, cost-effective, high performant solution that could scale on-demand. Additionally, Credera established log-based metrics and alerts using Cloud Monitoring to enable the operator’s managed support team to offer real-time technical support and advised on a nationwide rollout strategy and execution plan.

The Results

Improving guest and team member experiences at scale.

The restaurant services operator successfully rolled out the new mobile handheld solution to over 1,200 restaurant locations and it continues to be onboarded at every new restaurant opening. It addressed the technical issues of the previous solution and provides an elevated guest and team member experience. The solution continues to be onboarded at each new restaurant opening.
