NHS Digital

Europe's largest network transition of its kind, saving NHS £75 million per annum.

Credera supported NHS Digital deliver the Health and Social Care Network (HSCN) migration. This was Europe’s largest Wide Area Network (WAN) migration, helping the NHS save millions of pounds annually.

At a Glance

Credera were selected by NHS Digital to be their migration partner for Europe’s (and possibly the world's) largest transition of its kind: the migration of approximately 14,500 WAN services from a centrally managed, legacy network to a new disaggregated, multi-supplier marketplace. As a result of this programme, like-for-like network services are, on average, 70% cheaper than they were on N3, enabling NHS organisations to upgrade to faster, more reliable gigabit capable network services.

The Challenge

Migration of 14,500+ network services, connecting over 1,200 organisations in England.

The HSCN programme was established to deliver a disaggregated, multi-supplier marketplace, providing choice and value for money to health and social care organisations in England when procuring replacement network services.

This change was needed to address the increasing demand for high-bandwidth connectivity, and to replace the single supplier N3 network that had been in place for nearly 16 years.

The programme was also responsible for leading the procurement and replacement of 14,500 network services for GPs, NHS Trusts, and other sites across England.

The Solution

Work with NHSD to design and deliver the programme.

We defined the approach and programme strategy to ensure NHS organisations understood the process of buying replacement network services.

We worked with end customers and their new suppliers to support and track their migration journey. To make this easier, we defined and documented migration processes to fast-track transition across the country.

We also provided management, technical guidance and troubleshooting support directly to customers and suppliers to enable them to quickly resolve a range of different issues.

The Results

Delivery of migration and programme achieved.

By helping deliver this project, we have been part of a programme that has saved the NHS an average of £75 million annually.

Health and social care organisations can now buy value for money network services from a range of suppliers.

The speed and reliability these connections bring improves the NHS’s ability to share information quickly and efficiently between different organisations, as well as assisting with the NHS’s ongoing digital transformation journey.

The increased bandwidth and reliability provided by HSCN supports improved access to centrally hosted applications and services. It allows organisations to increasingly adopt digital services and facilitates the sharing of information between health and care providers.
