Building inclusive tech cultures: Lessons from the Credera x Home Office Women in Tech event

On November 6th, Credera had the privilege of hosting a half-day event dedicated to women in digital, data, and technology roles across the Home Office. Building on the momentum of our previous Women in Tech event and its insights, this session brought together voices from government and business to explore what inclusion, leadership, and real impact look like in today’s tech landscape. Especially as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes an ever-more central driver of change.

Here are the main lessons and practical steps that stood out — valuable for anyone who wants to make tech more inclusive and meaningful.

Visible leadership and allyship

A key message throughout the day was that women’s involvement in tech isn’t just “nice to have”, it’s essential. As Katie Gardiner, Director — Digital First at the UK Home Office, put it:

“Women working as part of the technology profession are absolutely essential for every public sector organisation to thrive and to deliver outcomes in a way that best serves the citizens and the public.”

Katie highlighted that while across the industry there are now more women in leadership roles than ever before, many still leave tech careers due to barriers to progression or lack of recognition. She pointed out the importance of fair access to opportunities, career development, and the need for everyone to take responsibility in supporting one another.

Visible leadership truly matters. When senior leaders show up, champion inclusion, and make their support clear, it tells everyone that diversity is valued.

But allyship isn’t just for those with senior titles. Everyone can help by amplifying voices, challenging bias, and supporting colleagues in small but powerful ways. Whether that’s inviting quieter team members to share their views or speaking up when they see bias in action.

Diversity in AI and digital teams

As technology evolves, it’s crucial that AI and digital tools are built by — and for — all of society.

Right now, women are still underrepresented in AI and data roles, especially at senior levels. This lack of diversity means systems designed by homogenous groups are at risk of reflecting only a narrow set of experiences, potentially leaving out or disadvantaging others. Building diverse teams is essential for creating tools that are trusted, fair and widely adopted.

“Our UK team at FleishmanHillard leads the way in AI adoption, and I partially credit that to it being 90% female. Success comes from nurturing behaviours and finding real-world uses for AI, not just telling people to use it.” — Joyce Higgins, Head of AI Strategy, FleishmanHillard UK

Building confidence and everyday inclusion

A major takeaway from the event was the need to move from talk to action. As Andrea Marshall Webb, Managing Director at Credera, stated:

“Inclusion isn’t a separate goal. All of us can do something that will improve the culture of inclusivity, which will then ultimately improve the AI that’s being developed.”

She described a five-pillar approach built on a foundation of inclusive culture and behaviours. Key habits included:

  1. Leading visibly: Let people see what you value.

  2. Stepping forward with confidence: Don’t wait for permission to share your perspective.

  3. Staying curious: Always ask yourself who’s missing from the room and what assumptions are being made.

  4. Being an ally: Support others, make space for new voices, and break cycles of bias.

  5. Creating opportunities: Sponsor colleagues, share credit, and open doors for others to progress.

Tackling bias — from tech systems to daily interactions

Confronting bias isn’t just a technical issue. It’s about everyday actions: who gets heard, who gets credit, and who gets opportunities.

Real progress comes from consciously making inclusion part of every project from the start, not as an afterthought. Networks and sponsorship play a big role, helping women navigate barriers, share experiences, and find allies who can advocate for their advancement. And big change often starts with small actions: speaking up, asking questions, and supporting each other.

“The fact that we are here today, talking about this, is evidence that bringing awareness to these issues does actually mobilise people into action.” — Slavina Racheva, AI Enablement Lead, Credera

Open conversations and a willingness to learn from both success and failure create the psychological safety needed for innovation. The event reinforced that everyone can help build an environment where inclusion thrives.

Everyone has agency

The day’s central message was about agency and shared responsibility. As Andrea Marshall Webb summarised:

“It’s not about policies and systems, it’s about how we lead, how we show up, what we choose to prioritise. Inclusive AI starts with us and together we really do have the power to shape what comes next.”

Throughout the event, it became clear that each of us has the ability to make a difference, regardless of our role or seniority. Whether it’s taking the initiative to ask whose voices are missing, offering support to a colleague, or challenging assumptions in daily meetings, everyone can contribute to a culture of inclusion.

The panel and audience shared many examples of small, everyday actions, like telling personal stories, checking in with colleagues, or simply creating space for honest conversations, that help break down barriers for others.

As AI and digital technology reshape public services and workplaces, building cultures where everyone can thrive is not only possible, but necessary. Individual actions, when multiplied, become a powerful engine for change.

The bottom line

Creating a more inclusive tech culture is something we all have a hand in, day to day. This event showed that real progress comes from visible leadership, diverse teams, open conversations, and the everyday actions of individuals who are willing to speak up, support each other, and drive change.
