Custom Application Development Initiative for Fortune 500 Movie Rental Company
Situation
This Dallas-based company is the leading provider of in-home movie and game entertainment, with approximately 8,000 stores throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australia and over 3.6 million online subscribers. This client participates in an extremely competitive environment that requires them to continuously improve the features and usability of their website, while maintaining very high stability and levels of service. Through our delivery and coaching, we helped them improve the throughput of the application development group to keep up with the rising demands of the business.

- Successfully completed over 15 custom application development projects
- Customer Facing: Site Redesign, Shopping Cart, Outlet, Community, Queue Enhancements, A la Carte Rentals, etc.
- Internal: Catalog Management Application, Business Administration Tool, Allocation, etc.
- The Site Redesign project was a major initiative that moved Blockbuster.com from a proprietary stack to an open source Java platform (i.e., Struts, Spring, Hibernate, AJAX) and vastly improved the performance and maintainability of the site
- Improved the efficiency of the application development group through coaching on Agile methods
- Introduced the team room concept (e.g., task board, co-located development team, etc.), which has now been adopted on other project teams
- Introduced a daily stand-up / Scrum meeting for the product owner, project manager, business analyst, development and QA teams to discuss status and resolve issues
- Introduced the idea of breaking large development cycles into smaller iterations, concluding with a product demo to key stakeholders
- Introduced new development project reporting methods (e.g., backlog, burndown, velocity, etc.) to other project managers and executive steering committee members
